Tell people what to do next

Give every page and post one clear next step, so visitors become enquiries.

Someone lands on your website or Facebook page. They like what they see. Do they know what to do next? If they have to hunt for how to contact you, most won't bother. They'll go back to Google and click on the next business instead.

Every page and every post should end with one clear next step. Marketers call it a "call to action".

1. Say exactly what you want people to do

Use short, active words on your buttons and links:

  • "Call now", "Get a quote", "Book online", "Order today"
  • Not "Submit", "Click here" or "Learn more"

Choose the action that suits your business. A plumber wants calls, a café wants bookings, and a craft shop wants orders.

2. Make contact details easy to find

  • Put your phone number and a contact button at the top of your website, not only in the footer.
  • On a phone, the number should be tap-to-call.
  • Fill in the contact button on your Facebook page (Call now, Send message or Book now).

3. One main button, not five

When a page offers "Call us", "Email us", "Follow us", "Sign up" and "Download our brochure" all at once, people freeze and do none of them. Pick the one action that matters most on each page and make it stand out. Everything else can be smaller.

Don't forget your posts

Social posts need a next step too. End each one with a single line like "Message us to book" or "Tap the link to get a quote".

Quick win

Look at your home page on your phone. Without scrolling, can you see what you do and how to contact you? If not, move your main button up.
